Summary

Astérix hit the NES in 1993 as a rare PAL‑only release, landing exclusively in Europe and never seeing an official launch in the U.S. The side‑scrolling platformer leans heavily on the beloved comic book universe, casting the pint‑sized Gaul as he dashes through levels that criss‑cross ancient Europe. Armed with the trademark magic potion, he battles legionaries, ferocious wolves, and even menacing bears while hunting down a captured Obelix before Caesar can toss him to the lions. Set in the chaotic year 50 BC, the game rewards timing and pattern memorization, mirroring the slap‑stick fights of the panels.
Critics of the time were surprisingly kind: German mags praised it with scores like 11/12 in Aktueller Software Markt and 83/100 in Computer and Video Games, while Nintendo Power gave a modest 11.5/20. Today it’s a cult curiosity for retro collectors.

Storyline

In the NES game Asterix, the action takes place in 50 BC, a time when the Romans have taken control of all Gaul. A lone Gaulish village still resists, thanks to a magic potion that grants its people near‑invincibility. The plot kicks off when the Romans capture Obelix and whisk him away to an unknown location. As the player you must guide Asterix through a series of Roman‑guarded levels to rescue his friend. The clock is ticking, because Caesar plans to toss Obelix to the lions if you don’t succeed in time.
