Summary

American Dream drops you into a stylized New York City that feels more like a neon‑lit stage set than a realistic metropolis. Though the city’s streets, taxis and ordinary cars are conspicuously absent, a lone black limousine—oddly cruising over grass—shuttles you from an air force base to the final casino, underscoring the game’s surreal take on urban life. The skyline is a patchwork of crumbling tenements, gleaming towers and gaudy casino facades, each rendered in bold, blocky graphics that echo the Joystix‑style lettering of the original Japanese text. In 2007, a ROM hacker known as Pale Dim gave the game an English translation, swapping the Japanese “Bom” explosion cue for an English “Boom” and making the upper‑case font readable for Western players.

Storyline

In the NES title American Dream, the player’s sole objective is to amass enough cash to claim the title of the world’s wealthiest gambler. The game’s progression revolves around earning money through various in‑game activities, with each success bringing the player closer to that ultimate goal. Adding a quirky historical twist, notorious gangster Al Capone makes a cameo appearance, even though his real‑life domain was Chicago—roughly a thousand miles west of the game’s setting. This unexpected cameo underscores the game’s blend of ambition and pop‑culture references.
