Summary

Alpha Mission, known in Japan as ASO: Armored Scrum Object, started as a hit arcade cabinet before SNK and G1M2 brought it to the Famicom and NES. The game feels like a love‑letter to Xevious, but it splits its firepower: missiles hammer ground targets while a laser‑like beam sweeps the sky for enemy aircraft. Each stage builds toward a distinct boss, and scattered power‑ups let you boost the ship’s arsenal—though a single hit wipes everything clean and drops you a few steps back. Its vertical scrolling pace and crisp sprite work earned it a spot as the second‑most successful table arcade unit in Japan’s November 1985 rankings, and it later ranked among the year’s top earners. Today the NES version lives on in the SNK 40th Anniversary Collection, preserving that classic dual‑weapon thrill for modern players.
