Summary
Al Unser Jr.'s Turbo Racing started life as the Japanese Famicom title World Grand Prix – Pole to Finish, then received a North‑American makeover that added the former IndyCar star as an in‑game coach, tweaked the lap count and gave the sound and menus a fresh feel. The NES version retains its Formula 1‑style chassis despite Unser never having competed in that championship, and it lets you steer with the D‑pad while A accelerates and B brakes. On screen you’ll see speed, gauges and a turbo‑boost meter, and you can fire the boost whenever you need an extra surge, but you must refuel before it burns out the engine. The game also offers a simple qualifying lap that determines your starting position for the race.
In Season mode you can either drive the blue‑and‑white Valvoline Lola‑Chevrolet as Unser himself or build a custom team from scratch, starting with a handful of setup points and working up a 16‑race calendar that mirrors the late‑1980s world tour. Points go to the top six finishers (9‑6‑4‑3‑2‑1) and can be traded for upgrades that improve handling, acceleration or boost capacity. Along the way you receive tips from Unser, can pit to repair damage or refuel the turbo, and choose the number of laps for each circuit. All sixteen tracks, from Brazil to Long Beach, are roughly 3.3 miles long, and the fastest lap clocks in at just over 52 seconds. Up to four players can challenge each other in two separate time‑trial modes.
