Summary
Castlevania, known in Japan as Akumajō Dracula, drops you into a gothic nightmare where every hallway feels like a set from a classic horror film. I’m constantly juggling Simon’s whip—called the Vampire Killer—with a handful of backup weapons that each cost a precious heart, from holy‑water grenades to a watch that freezes foes in time. The game’s structure of six three‑stage blocks forces you to master the timing of the whip’s crack, the rhythm of the timer, and the placement of hidden food that restores health, all while hunting the red orb that revives you after each boss battle. Hitoshi Akamatsu’s direction shines through the cinematic music and monster designs; each boss feels like a cameo from a monster movie, and the stage layouts reward careful exploration of hidden candles and secret rooms. Even decades later, the title’s reputation endures—its inclusion on the NES Classic and frequent rankings among the best NES games prove that the blend of atmosphere, tight platforming, and strategic weapon management still haunts players today.
Storyline
Akumajou Dracula (commonly known as Castlevania) on the NES follows Simon Belmont, a descendant of a legendary vampire hunter. He returns to Dracula’s castle a century after his ancestor’s victory, only to find the Count resurrected. Simon’s ultimate objective is to defeat Count Dracula and the Curse of Man at the end of Stage 18, causing the castle to collapse.
When the final confrontation arrives, the game warns you to keep your courage up, keep your stake sharp, and say your prayers before facing the Count.
