Summary
The 3-D Battles of World Runner (often called 3‑D WorldRunner on its North American box) feels like a time capsule of late‑80s arcade ambition, packing a pseudo‑3D rail‑shooter feel into a home console. By splitting the screen into two slightly offset views and throwing in a pair of red‑cyan glasses, Square let players glimpse an anaglyph 3D world that was rare for NES cartridges, a gimmick that still looks oddly charming today.
You control Jack as he barrels through eight scrolling worlds, leaping over bottomless chasms and blasting blob‑like aliens with collectable missiles. Each world is divided into quadrants filled with pillar power‑ups—temporary invincibility, laser bursts, and score‑boosting stars—culminating in a serpentine boss that finally lets you move freely in all directions. The pace never truly stops; you can speed up or slow down, but the forward scroll forces constant motion.
Critics at launch praised the vivid palette and the sheer visual novelty, though later retrospectives called it a Space Harrier copycat despite its unique soundtrack and bright aesthetics. Sales hovered around half a million copies, enough to keep Square afloat until the breakthrough of Final Fantasy, and the game remains a quirky footnote in the evolution of early 3D gaming.
Storyline
3-D Battles of World Runner, often just called World Runner, puts you in the boots of Jack the WorldRunner, a wild "space cowboy" on a desperate mission. Jack must travel across the galaxy to rescue planets that have been overrun by serpentine beasts.
The game’s setting is Solar System #517, where a race of alien Serpentbeasts, commanded by the evil Grax, has taken control. As WorldRunner you battle through eight different planets, using fireballs to hunt down and finally destroy Grax and his minions.
