Summary

I first saw Zombie Hunter while browsing Japanese retro catalogs, and its blend of action and RPG elements immediately caught my eye. The whole experience is framed around six side‑scrolling stages, each littered with relentless enemy encounters that demand you either defeat or drive them off before the screen even lets you move forward. What makes it stand out is the magazine‑born development—Hi‑Score, a once‑a‑month gaming digest, built the whole game from the ground up, giving it a surprisingly polished feel despite its niche release. Every level feels like a little marathon, and the satisfaction of finally clearing a wave is oddly rewarding. Even though it never left Japan, Zombie Hunter remains a hidden gem that showcases the experimental spirit of early ’90s console design.

Storyline

Zombie Hunter on MSX2 drops you into the once‑peaceful city of Palma, a place guarded for ages by four elemental spirits—fire, water, wind, and earth. The balance shatters when Dolgo, the spirit of earth, rebels, stealing the Life Seeker—a device that regulates the world’s Energy—and retreats into a sprawling underground labyrinth. As Dolgo learns to wield that Energy, the citizens of Palma begin losing their souls, and the city sinks into sorrow.

Ariel, the wind spirit, tasks her subordinate Byuzu with finding a champion. Byuzu discovers you, a lone warrior summoned to confront Dolgo and reclaim the Life Seeker. Armed with limited gear, you descend into the maze, battling twisted creatures and unraveling the mystery behind the stolen power. Your quest is to restore the Life Seeker, free the trapped souls, and bring peace back to Palma.
