Summary

Xevious: Fardraut Saga feels like a hidden gem of the late‑80s, born when Namco handed the reins to Compile—a studio better known for Puyo Puyo, Zanac and Aleste. Under the direction of founder Masamitsu “Moo” Mitani, the team gave the classic vertically‑scrolling shooter a fresh coat of skin for the MSX2, adding two distinct modes: Recon, a faithful port of the original, and Scramble, a new 16‑area gauntlet packed with fresh enemies, boss battles, the Andor Genesis, and three variant Solvalou ships.

The game’s dual‑weapon system—air zapper and ground bomb—gets a tactical boost from power‑ups, but the steep difficulty and modest graphics kept its reputation mixed. Critics praised the nostalgic inclusion of the original Xevious and the bold new gameplay, while lamenting its repetitive music and limited replay value. The box art even reused 3D models from a CGI short Namco produced that same year, making it a true collector’s curiosity.

Storyline

Xevious: Fardraut Saga puts the player in the cockpit of a lone starfighter tasked with stopping the alien Xevious army before its supercomputer commander GAMP can eradicate humanity. Each stage begins with a short dialogue screen that outlines the current situation and the stakes, reinforcing the narrative that the world hangs on the pilot’s success. The plot draws directly from Masanobu Endo’s novel Fardraut, which expands the Xevious universe and explains the origins of the enemy forces.
The story frames the battle as a desperate last‑stand, with GAMP’s calculated logic contrasted against the human resolve of the pilot. By integrating the novel’s lore, the game offers a deeper context for the iconic aerial combat that defines the series.
