Summary

New Devil Golvellius (known in Japan as Shin Maou Golvellius) arrived on the MSX2 as a 1988 remake that leans heavily on the visual style of the Sega Master System version. The sprites and colour palette feel instantly familiar, but the game doesn’t simply copy its predecessor.

What sets this edition apart is the complete overhaul of the overworld and dungeon layouts. Every map has been redrawn, turning the familiar graphics into a fresh maze of hidden passages and new routes that even seasoned players will have to relearn.

Because the scenery looks the same while the geography is wholly different, the MSX2 version feels like a parallel universe of the original. It offers a nostalgic look for fans and a surprisingly novel challenge for anyone picking it up for the first time.

Storyline

In the MSX2 version titled New Devil Golvellius (often simply called New Devil Golvellius), the story follows the brave warrior Kelesis. He ventures into the dreaded Valley of Doom to rescue Princess Rena, who entered the valley seeking a rare herb needed to heal her ailing father, the King. The plot is identical across all three Golvellius releases.
