Summary
Arkanoid: Revenge of Doh adds a clever branching mechanic called "Warp Gates". When you finish a stage or snag the Break (B) pill, two gates pop up at the bottom and the side you choose determines which version of the next level you’ll face. The fire button only comes into play when you catch a Laser Cannon (L) or Catch (C) pill, keeping the control scheme tidy.
The sequel also sprinkles in fresh power‑ups and enemy types, plus two novel brick varieties. Notched silver bricks behave like their regular cousins but, after a brief pause, they rebuild themselves at full strength – you don’t even need to destroy them to clear a stage. Some bricks even slide left‑right as long as nothing blocks their path.
In the US release, Level 1 gets a complete redesign: a whole row of those regenerative notched bricks sits at the bottom while the colored bricks above sway side‑to‑side, giving the opening a distinct rhythm.
Round 17 throws a giant brain mini‑boss at you, and after surviving all 33 rounds you confront DOH twice – first as a statue‑like figure, then as a tentacled creature that regenerates its limbs when struck.
Home ports bundle a level editor, letting players craft or tweak stages, and the arcade version was a hit in Japan, ranking third on Game Machine’s July 1, 1987 table‑unit chart and ending 1988 as the country’s eighth‑best‑selling conversion kit.
Storyline
In Arkanoid 2 – often referred to by its casual title VAUS 2 – the player once again pilots the iconic Vaus paddle to confront the resurrected enemy DOH. After the original Arkanoid’s apparent defeat, the dimension‑controlling force DOH has revived, taken over the massive ZARG spacecraft, and set its sights on revenge.
The game’s campaign, titled “Revenge of DOH,” challenges the player to survive 34 distinct rounds drawn from a pool of 64 levels. As the Vaus‑type spacefighter MIXTEC sifts through forgotten data, it must battle through these stages to finally destroy DOH and halt its vengeful incursion.
