Summary

Parodius: The Octopus Saves the Earth is Konami’s tongue‑in‑cheek answer to the classic Gradius shooter, swapping sleek star‑fighters for a cast of goofy mascots. You can pilot an octopus named Tako, a grumpy Penguin from Antarctic Adventure, the mischievous Goemon, the chivalrous Popolon knight, or even the iconic Vic Viper ship, each waddling or soaring through six wildly themed stages. The levels pepper the screen with everything from buzzing bees and waddling penguins to the stone‑eyed Moai statues that Gradius fans will instantly recognize, all while a selection‑bar power‑up system lets you stack weapons just like the original.

What makes this MSX oddball stand out is its soundtrack, which leans heavily on familiar classical melodies, and its heavy infusion of Japanese folklore and pop culture references. The result feels like a love letter to early Konami titles, wrapped in a parody that’s as playful as it is nostalgic.

Even though it never saw an official U.S. release, the game earned a quirky honor from Electronic Gaming Monthly in 1992, being named the "Best Game that Never Came out in the U.S."—a badge of pride for any retro‑gaming collector.
