Summary
Ninja Princess (sometimes called Sega Ninja) drops you into a feudal‑Japan battlefield where you control Princess Kurumi, a rare female ninja hero for a mid‑80s run‑and‑gun. Your arsenal is simple but satisfying: an endless stream of throwing knives, occasional shuriken power‑ups, and a brief invisibility cloak that lets you slip past samurai, rival ninjas and even feral dogs. Most stages scroll vertically, but the game throws in a wall‑climbing segment that breaks the monotony and forces you to think on your feet. The home‑console ports on the SG‑1000 and MSX trim the original 16 arcade stages down to 13 and, in the Western Master System release, swap Kurumi for a male ninja who must rescue her, while also adding a scroll‑collecting quest that gates the final level. Critics at the time praised its fresh setting and unusual perspective, and retro reviewers still cite it as a surprisingly sophisticated predecessor to later classics like Commando.
Storyline
Ninja Princess is set in Japan’s Edo period, around the year 1630, in the western province of Ohkami. The region has fallen under the iron grip of the evil tyrant Gyokuro, who has seized power and plunged the land into oppression.
You take control of Princess Kurumi (くるみ姫), a skilled female ninja determined to end Gyokuro’s rule. As Kurumi, you battle through hordes of enemies, slicing through the forces that have overrun the countryside.
The core of the game is a quest to recapture lost territories and retake the castle that the enemy has occupied, restoring peace to Ohkami and freeing its people from tyranny.
