Summary

I first noticed Keystone Kapers because its humor and tight controls still feel fresh. Garry Kitchen built the title on a modest 4 KB ROM on a PDP‑11, trimming ideas like a Model T outside scene to fit the Atari 2600. The game borrows the frantic climb of Donkey Kong and the trap‑dodging feel of Pitfall!, but Kitchen flipped the layout to a horizontal sweep across a department‑store four floors deep. An escalator and elevators let the cop bounce between levels while shopping carts, beach balls and toy biplanes rush the player.

In play, Officer Kelly chases the thief Harry Hooligan across a scrolling backdrop, dodging obstacles and collecting money bags for points; every 10,000 points grants an extra life. A tiny radar bar at the bottom shows the cop as a black dot and the crook as white. The game later reached ColecoVision and the Atari 5200, adding music and level selection, and earned a Certificate of Merit in the 1984 Arkie Awards. Retro reviewers still rank it among the top Atari 2600 experiences. A planned sequel finally appeared as Casey’s Gold in 2024.

Storyline

Keystone Kapers follows police officer Keystone Kelly as he pursues the slippery con‑artist Harry Hooligan through Southwick's Emporium, a sprawling department store. The action unfolds across four floors, with Kelly riding elevators and an escalator while dodging a variety of obstacles that litter the aisles. A tiny mini‑map constantly updates Harry’s position, letting the player keep the chase alive. The game ends either when Harry manages to slip out onto the roof or when Kelly loses all his lives.
