Summary

The MSX port of *H.E.R.O.* (Helicopter Emergency Rescue Operation) keeps the frantic mine‑rescue premise that made the Atari original a standout. You control Roderick Hero, a hover‑capable rescuer equipped with a microlaser helmet and a limited stash of dynamite to blast through stone or molten walls. Energy drains as soon as you move, so timing the hover, laser shots, and detonations becomes a careful balancing act.

Japanese magazine *Technopolis* praised the MSX version as a perfect fit for the system, noting its smooth controls, engaging narrative, and satisfying gameplay loop. Levels grow more labyrinthine, introducing swarms of bats, snakes and lava pools that force quick‑thinking maneuvers. Bonus points for destroying enemies, clearing walls, and conserving explosives award extra lives every twenty‑thousand points, while hitting the one‑million‑point ceiling ends the rescue run.

Fans of classic platformers appreciate how *H.E.R.O.* let you freely fly left, right and upward—an early glimpse of the multidirectional freedom that later titles like *Bionic Commando* would refine.

Storyline

In the MSX classic H.E.R.O., a volcanic eruption on Mount Leone seals the mine shafts and endangers the workers inside. Roderick Hero, a seasoned miner, is called in to navigate the treacherous tunnels. Armed with only a flashlight, rope, and a pick, he must avoid falling rocks and hostile creatures. The goal is to locate and rescue each trapped miner before the volcano’s fury overwhelms the cavern.

The game’s level design forces Hero to manage limited supplies while timing his movements through darkness. Each rescued worker adds a point, and the clock ticks down as lava threatens to flood the shafts. Success hinges on quick reflexes and careful planning, making H.E.R.O. a tense, atmospheric rescue mission.
