Summary
Frogger’s charm lies in its relentless back‑and‑forth rhythm: you hop a tiny amphibian across a snarling highway, then time jumps onto drifting logs, turtles that vanish after a few seconds, and the backs of alligators that bite if you land on their faces. Later levels throw snakes and otters into the river, while a bright female frog on a log offers a fleeting bonus. Each successful crossing nets 50 points, plus extra rewards for landing on a fly or escorting a lady frog home, and the timer hands you ten points for every half‑second you save. The opening tune is a Japanese children’s song, later mixed with "Yankee Doodle" for the U.S. release, a quirky audio signature that still rings in arcades. Decades after its debut, Frogger remains a cultural touchstone, popping up in TV shows, movies, and even a real‑life Roomba‑styled competition, while high‑score hunters continue to chase the million‑point milestone set in 2017.
Storyline
In Frogger, the player’s goal is to guide a lone frog from the bottom of the screen to one of five empty homes at the very top. The lower half begins with a busy road where race cars, dune buggies, trucks and bulldozers speed by, forcing the frog to time its hops carefully. After crossing the road, a median strip separates it from the upper half, which is a river filled with moving logs, turtles and alligators that travel in opposite directions. While navigating the water, the frog must avoid snakes, otters and the open jaws of alligators, though a brightly colored female frog sometimes shares a log as a harmless companion. The homes at the top may hide bonus insects or deadly alligators, adding a final risk before the level is completed.
