Summary

Championship Lode Runner builds on the classic Lode Runner formula but cranks the challenge up to eleven. The core loop is simple: collect every pile of gold and haul it to the exit, all while avoiding enemies who can’t be beaten with weapons—any collision costs a life and strips you of any gold you’ve gathered. The game forces you through fifty meticulously crafted levels in strict order, and even though you can save your progress, each restore deducts a life, making every checkpoint a gamble. Unlike the original, there’s no level editor; the stages are all hand‑designed, many of them originally created with the first game’s built‑in editor. The title made its debut on the Apple II and quickly spread to systems like the Commodore 64, IBM PC, Atari 8‑bit, Famicom, SG‑1000 and MSX, with Compile handling the latter two ports. Even seasoned players were warned to grab the hint book, as each of the fifty puzzles can take twice as long to solve as the toughest original levels.
