Summary

Square gave Japanese MSX owners a quirky twist on Activision’s classic by releasing Aliens – Alien 2, a title that feels like a cross between a platformer and a run‑and‑gun shooter. You control Ripley, starting out with just a simple blaster as you trek across a hostile alien‑infested world. The enemies are the familiar face‑huggers that burst from eggs, and once you take one down you can blast the egg open to uncover power‑ups such as hand grenades, upgraded weapons, or wing items that let Ripley leap farther.

The power‑up system adds a layer of strategy: a well‑timed grenade can clear a swarm, while a stronger gun lets you punch through tougher foes. The wing items are especially fun, turning ordinary jumps into long‑range hops that feel satisfying in the tight platform sections. Beyond the alien menace, the game throws in an unexpected hazard—snakes slithering across the terrain, forcing you to stay on your toes.

All of this combines into a fast‑paced, oddly charming experience that stands out from other MSX releases, offering a distinct flavor of sci‑fi action that only Square’s Japanese spin could deliver.

Storyline

In the MSX title Alien 2, Ellen Ripley finds herself stranded on a hostile planet teeming with alien life. After battling through the surface level and eliminating the immediate threat, she discovers an underground complex that houses the game’s first major boss—a massive, fully grown alien. Defeating this towering creature opens the way to the next stage, which takes place entirely within the labyrinthine complex, deepening the sense of claustrophobic danger.
