Summary

The MSX port of 1942 drops you into a relentless vertical scroll where you command a Lockheed P‑38 Lightning affectionately dubbed the “Super Ace.” A single hit or collision ends your run, so every dodge feels like a high‑stakes dogfight. The game’s design leans into Western sensibilities, swapping out the usual Japanese warplane for the iconic American fighter.

Power‑ups appear after you blast through specific enemy formations, and one of the most satisfying is the Tip Tow, which spawns two tiny wingmen that flank your aircraft. A dedicated roll button lets you loop out of the action for a brief escape, while the scoring system tracks both a classic high score and a percentage score that reflects how many foes you actually shot down.

You can battle solo or team up for two‑player chaos, facing off against Kawasaki Ki‑61s, Mitsubishi A6M Zeros, Kawasaki Ki‑48s, and a hulking Nakajima G10N boss that caps each stage. Each encounter feels like a slice of World War II aerial combat, wrapped in the arcade‑style reflex challenge that made the original a hit.

Storyline

1942 drops you into the Pacific Theater of World II, loosely echoing the historic Battle of Midway. Though the game was crafted by Japanese developers, the player’s mission is to guide the ace pilot “Super Ace” from the Midway skirmish toward Tokyo, taking down the Japanese air fleet along the way. Each of the many stages begins and ends on an aircraft carrier, then launches you over both sea and land as you battle enemy forces. The setting moves from the open ocean to island and mainland targets, keeping the action focused on the iconic 1942‑style dogfights.
