Summary
Seen from a top‑down, vertically scrolling field, 10‑Yard Fight drops you straight into the snap. There are no playbooks to leaf through; on offense you either sprint with the quarterback, pitch to a running back, or fling a pass to the lone deep receiver, and you can also choose to punt or attempt a field goal. On defense you control one of two players while the AI handles the rest.
The game offers five difficulty tiers—high school, college, professional, playoff and Super Bowl—acting like a simple career mode; clearing both halves of an accelerated 30‑minute half upgrades you to the next level. A rare 20,000‑point bonus is awarded for returning any kickoff for a touchdown, urging frantic sprinting for that first down.
Although the arcade debuted in 1983, the MSX port was released only in Japan, turning it into a hidden gem for collectors outside that market. At the time, trade magazines named it the top‑grossing table arcade cabinet and later called it the “patriarch of football games,” noting its role in moving the genre past Atari’s early attempts.
