Summary
Zool: Ninja of the Nth Dimension landed on the Game Gear as Gremlin’s bold answer to Sonic’s speed rush. I loved how the handheld captured the original’s blur‑fast platforming, pushing the tiny screen to feel almost as fluid as the Amiga version. The game hides quirky minigames—a hidden piano challenge and even a scrolling space shooter—just for those who stumble across invisible warp points. Its soundtrack, a remix of Patrick Phelan’s Amiga score, still manages to cut through the Gear’s tinny speakers with surprising clarity. Fun fact: the whole project originally went by the goofy name “Pootz,” and a Chupa‑Chups sponsorship even splashed the candy logo across the levels. GamePro praised the handheld port for its crisp graphics and sound, noting it proved the Gear could handle a true “Sonic‑style” sprint.
Storyline
Zool, the gremlin dubbed the “Ninja of the Nth Dimension,” is forced to crash‑land on Earth in the Game Gear version of Zool. The alien ninja’s mission is to prove himself by conquering seven distinct lands. Each land presents its own themed hazards and culminates in a showdown with a powerful boss. Defeating every boss is the only way Zool can achieve the coveted ninja ranking and return to his home dimension.
