Summary
X-Men for the Sega Game Gear is a side‑scrolling beat‑'em‑up that borrows its play‑style from the Mega Drive classic. From the outset you can control either Cyclops or Wolverine as you hack through three initial stages. Defeating enemies and completing each stage unlocks additional mutants – Storm, Iceman, Rogue, Nightcrawler and Psylocke – which you can swap into when new allies are rescued. Each hero’s mutant ability can be toggled on demand, but using it quickly depletes a separate energy meter. The game’s level design weaves together technological corridors, savage jungles and bizarre laboratory labyrinths.
Boss encounters include Callisto, Sauron, Sebastian Shaw, Omega Red, a Brood Queen and culminate with Magneto as the final showdown. These battles take place in diverse locales such as the Morlock tunnels, the Savage Land, the Hellfire Club and the Brood homeworld. The title earned praise from GamePro for packing "Marvel‑ous comic‑book mayhem" into the tiny cartridge while demanding long play sessions. Its popularity showed up on the charts, landing as the United States’ best‑selling Game Gear title in February 1994. Fans of the franchise still cite the portable X‑Men as a standout retro beat‑'em‑up experience.
Storyline
In X‑Men (Game Gear), Magneto launches a surprise attack on the X‑Men’s headquarters and captures most of the team. Only Wolverine and Cyclops manage to escape the initial assault and are the characters you control at the start. Your mission is to battle through Magneto’s forces, locate the imprisoned teammates, and free them one by one. Each rescued mutant joins your roster, bringing unique abilities that help you push deeper into Magneto’s stronghold. Ultimately, with the full team assembled, you use their combined powers to defeat Magneto and restore the X‑Men.
