Summary

Spirou on the Game Gear never saw an official launch, but the completed prototype eventually surfaced on the internet, offering a glimpse of what could have been. The unreleased title holds the same crisp, comic‑book visual style that impressed reviewers on other systems, though its punishing difficulty kept it firmly in the realm of hardcore fans.

The gameplay mirrors its console siblings: you can run, jump, duck, and even slide along the ground, while a later‑stage Micropulser provides a ranged option. Underwater segments force you to manage a dwindling breath supply, which is extendable with hidden oxygen bottles, and a modest health bar grants six hits before a life is lost. Collecting fifty Spirou hats rewards an extra life, and hearts restore health points.

A single password restarts the adventure midway, and three selectable difficulty levels let players choose their level of challenge, all complemented by a hidden sound‑test menu.

Storyline

Spirou, the intrepid journalist, and his sidekick Fantasio travel to New York for an international scientific conference. Upon arriving, they learn that their old friend Count Champignac, a key inventor at the event, has vanished without a trace. The culprit is revealed to be Cyanide, a rogue robot and one of Spirou’s longtime foes, who has kidnapped the count. Using Champignac’s own inventions, Cyanide intends to unleash an army of robots to dominate Earth and enslave humanity. While Spirou focuses on rescuing the count and thwarting the robot uprising, Fantasio works behind the scenes to gather the intelligence needed to support his friend’s mission.
