Summary

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on the Game Gear feels like a turbo‑charged remix of its 8‑bit predecessor, packing all‑new zones, minecarts, hang gliders and even vertical loops into a handheld that could finally hold a four‑megabit cartridge. Aspect handled the programming while Sega oversaw the project, and the result was a game that pushed the portable’s screen resolution to its limits – the sprite for Sonic is noticeably larger than in the original Game Gear title, giving the action a crisp, almost arcade‑like feel.

The level design is famously unforgiving; narrow sightlines and labyrinth‑like layouts make hazards pop up before you can react, a fact that earned it a reputation as the hardest Sonic on the system. Critics noted the lack of checkpoint and shield boxes, but praised the new ability to smash through walls and collect rings you drop when hit. Each of the seven zones splits into two acts and ends with a showdown against one of Robotnik’s robots, while the end‑of‑act signposts spin to award random bonuses.

When it launched in late 1992, the game quickly became the best‑selling Game Gear title, moving over 400,000 units and ranking third in UK sales for December that year. It was later honored as Electronic Gaming Monthly’s portable Game of the Year and has resurfaced on several retro collections, from Sonic Gems Collection to the 3DS Virtual Console and the 2023 Sonic Origins Plus anthology.

Storyline

In Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for Game Gear, the adventure picks up right after the events of the previous title. Sonic returns home only to discover that Dr. Robotnik has kidnapped his buddy Miles “Tails” Prower, prompting him to set off on a rescue mission.

To free Tails, Sonic must hunt down all six Chaos Emeralds hidden across the game’s stages. Collecting every emerald enables the final showdown where Tails can be saved.
