Summary

Sonic & Tails, known abroad as Sonic Chaos, was the first Game Gear Sonic title to let you pick Tails as a fully playable partner, complete with his own flight and hover tricks that let you skim over traps. Sonic keeps his signature speed, but he also gains the Super Peel‑Out from Sonic CD and a one‑time Rocket Shoes boost that lets him fly briefly, while Tails simply receives extra rings when he smashes a Rocket Shoes monitor.

The levels are built for speed, peppered with tiny TV screens that hide power‑ups like speed shoes, shields and extra lives. Rings act as a protective buffer, and hitting the 100‑ring mark zaps you to a hidden stage where a Chaos Emerald can be earned; the number of emeralds you collect determines which ending you see.

Beyond the original cartridge, the game resurfaced as an unlockable in Sonic Adventure DX: Director’s Cut and later in Sonic Mega Collection Plus, then appeared on the blue‑hued Game Gear Micro in 2020. It was bundled again for Sonic Origins Plus in 2023 and even shows up as a minigame in the 2026 releases Yakuza Kiwami 3 and Dark Ties.

Storyline

In Sonic & Tails for the Game Gear, Sonic the Hedgehog teams up with his winged friend Miles “Tails” Prower on a high‑stakes mission. Dr. Robotnik has stolen all the Chaos Emeralds and is using their power to build nuclear weapons. The duo must race through Robotnik’s traps and reclaim each emerald before the mad scientist can wield them to dominate the world. Their adventure is another classic showdown against the evil Dr. Robotnik.
