Summary

Sonic Drift is the first Sonic‑the‑Hedgehog kart racer, borrowing the high‑speed, drift‑focused feel of Sega’s Out Run arcade titles. You pick from Sonic, Tails, Eggman or Amy—Amy’s debut as a playable Sonic character—and steer through tight corners by braking while turning, a technique that can spin you out if overused. Rings litter the courses, letting each character unleash a unique special move, while power‑ups appear on scattered TV monitors.

The game offers 18 tracks that are essentially re‑themed versions of zones from the original 1991 Sonic platformer, from Green Hill to Labyrinth. In the single‑player Chaos GP mode you chase three colored cups—green, yellow and red—each containing six tracks, and points are awarded for finishing positions. A practice Free Run and a Versus mode round out the options.

Released only in Japan in March 1994, a Western launch was scrapped over quality concerns, though the title resurfaced later as an unlockable in Sonic Adventure DX (2003), in the Sonic Mega Collection Plus (2004) and finally in Sonic Origins Plus (2023).

Critics were largely unimpressed: reviewers slammed the flickering graphics, repetitive track design and shallow difficulty, calling it a “poor man’s Out Run” and a lazy cash‑in on Mario Kart’s formula, even though a few noted the solid core racing mechanics and decent sound.
