Summary
Shining Force Gaiden: Ensei – Jashin no Kuni he (often referred to in English as Shining Force Gaiden: Towards the Root of Evil) drops you back into the Shining Force universe twenty years after the original saga, and it marks the debut of the Gaiden sub‑series on Sega’s handheld Game Gear.
The title sticks to the classic turn‑based tactical formula: you move a squad across grid‑based maps, watch the action unfold in a single‑screen battle, then return to brief cutscenes that push the story forward.
Between fights you can save your progress, promote characters to more powerful classes, even bring fallen allies back to life, and occasionally visit a shop to trade weapons and healing items—all using the same leveling and combat mechanics that made the original Shining Force feel so rewarding.
Storyline
In Shining Force Gaiden - Ensei, Jashin no Kuni e (often just called Shining Force Gaiden), you play as Nick, a visitor to Guardiana who is unexpectedly chosen to lead the Guardiana Shining Force. The new leader must journey to the Kingdom of Cypress to free Guardiana’s captured soldiers and find a cure for Queen Anri, who has been placed under a sleep spell by the Cypress ambassador, Woldol. The tale unfolds twenty years after the original Shining Force, continuing Guardiana’s history while introducing a fresh threat to the nation. Familiar faces such as Anri, Ken, Lug (named Luke in the original), Lowe and the hidden character Domingo appear, and the starting party is made up of the sons of Lug, Ken and Hans, Tao’s sister, and Gong’s nephew. This title launches the Cypress saga, which is picked up two months later in the Game Gear sequel Shining Force: The Sword of Hajya, where the war between Cypress and Iom’s worshippers is resolved.
