Summary

The Game Gear version of Shaq‑Fu brings the infamous basketball‑star‑turned‑fighter to a handheld screen, but it’s a stripped‑down slice of the original. Only six fighters make the roster – Shaq himself, Leotsu, Mephis, Rajah, Kaori and Sett Ra – and the mode‑heavy tournament that defined the console releases is gone. Even the in‑game voice samples are missing, leaving the combat to rely on simple sprite animation and a limited move set. Critics were split at launch, noting the novelty of Shaquille O’Neal’s martial‑arts aspirations but lamenting the shallow gameplay; over time the title has earned a reputation as one of the worst games ever made, a curious footnote in 90s fighting‑game history.

Storyline

In Shaq-Fu, Shaquille O'Neal steps into a dojo on his way to a charity basketball game in Tokyo. He talks with martial‑arts master Leotsu, who mistakenly believes Shaq is the warrior foretold by the Stars.

The master sends him to the mysterious Second World, where Shaq must rescue a boy named Nezu from the evil mummy Sett‑Ra. After battling Sett‑Ra and his minions, Shaq frees Nezu and returns just in time for his game, only to discover that Beast, one of the defeated minions, has followed him back and is now playing for the opposing team, demanding a rematch.
