Summary

Ristar on the Game Gear lets you swing through bright, side‑scrolling stages as an anthropomorphic star with stretchable arms. The core mechanic isn’t about jumping so much as grabbing enemies and head‑butting them to clear obstacles or launch yourself forward.

The level layouts are a fresh remix compared to the Genesis original: half of the stages reuse familiar themes like a fauna‑filled opening world, while the other half introduce brand‑new settings such as swash‑buckling pirate ships. Tiny stars sparkle throughout each planet; gathering 100 of them grants an extra life, and every world ends with a unique boss fight, though the usual mid‑level mini‑bosses are gone.

The Game Gear version adds a few quirky tools. Defeated foes can drop hats that become temporary weapons, or spears that act as makeshift platforms when you thrust them into walls. A red star powers Ristar up with brief invincibility, faster movement, and a damaging touch, and colored square boxes—Mario‑style coin boxes—must be smashed with a head‑butt. Notably, the North American release trims the second level of the Fanturn planet, leaving that world with only one stage.
