Summary
Riddick Bowe Boxing on the Game Gear feels like a stripped‑down cousin of the SNES classic Greatest Heavyweights, with the same 2‑D sprite boxers and a simple ring, but every piece of artwork was redrawn for the handheld. I’m drawn to the career mode’s quirky aging system: after 35 fights your boxer’s hair turns gray, and at 40 fights the game forces retirement, even if you’ve never toppled Bowe. The stats—power, stamina, speed—can be nudged up with training bonuses, yet they slowly fade as you grind through matches. The SNES version earned a solid 7.2 from EGM, praised for its responsive controls, while the Game Gear port drew criticism for its thin backgrounds and sluggish button response. A Spanish‑only SNES variant swapped Bowe for Julio César Chávez, essentially the same game with a different name and language.
