Summary

Revenge of Drancon, the Game Gear's quirky Wonder Boy spin, feels like a portable arcade sprint. The graphics are lifted directly from the original cabinets, brightened for the tiny screen, while the HUD shrinks to a single vitality bar and a pre‑level score tally. The hardware quirks force a few gameplay twists: a high jump only works when you hold the run button, and the sound has been re‑mixed to fit the system’s limited audio.

What really sets this version apart are the added areas – nine standard stages plus a secret tenth unlocked by gathering every doll, each with fresh level designs that didn’t exist in the arcade. I also love the two‑player alternating mode, letting friends swap in whenever a life is lost, and the odd power‑ups you crack out of eggs, from skateboards to temporary angel shields.

Storyline

In Revenge of Drancon, a young hero is ambushed by the tyrannical Evil King Drancon. He manages a narrow escape, only to watch the king snatch his girlfriend, Tina, and vanish with her. Determined, the boy roams a mysterious island, constantly evading the Grim Reaper—an emissary dispatched by Drancon to seal his fate. After a long series of trials and hidden quests, he finally confronts the Evil King in a climactic showdown and rescues Tina. Returning home, the villagers celebrate him as a true "Wonder Boy," cementing his legend.
