Summary
The Game Gear port of the 1992 arcade Puyo Puyo brings the classic tile‑matching frenzy to a handheld screen, but only in its original Japanese form. When the cartridge is run on a non‑Japanese Game Gear it automatically switches to a look‑alike version called *Puzlow Kids*, a quirky rename that never saw an official Western release.
In this version the player guides round, slime‑like creatures called Puyo as they tumble in pairs, triples or quadruples. Aligning four or more of the same colour makes them pop, and clever chain reactions generate translucent Garbage Puyo that clog the opponent’s field. The tension builds as each successive chain sends more garbage, forcing the rival to scramble before the dreaded third‑column‑from‑the‑left fills up.
Because the Game Gear edition stayed Japan‑only, most English‑speaking fans first encountered the mechanics through later ports, making the handheld original a hidden gem for collectors and retro puzzle enthusiasts.
Storyline
Puyo Puyo began as a spin‑off of Compile’s first‑person RPG series Madō Monogatari, borrowing its cast of characters for the puzzle battles. The original 1992 arcade title was later localized with minor visual tweaks, such as renaming the Harpy to Dark Elf. When Sega brought the game to the Game Gear, it was rebranded as Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine, swapping the Madō Monogatari heroes for villains from the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon. This Game Gear version is directly adapted from the Japanese Nazo Puyo puzzle, keeping the core mechanic of matching colored blobs while featuring Sonic’s antagonists as the playable cast.
