Summary

Prince of Persia on the Game Gear carries the same fluid, rotoscoped animation that made the original a landmark cinematic platformer, and it arrived courtesy of The Kremlin with Domark handling the publishing. The handheld version squeezes the classic twelve‑level dungeon crawl into a 60‑minute timer, letting you pause after level 2 with a save slot.

Your health is tracked by tiny red triangles; three start you off, and you can boost the maximum by finding large red jars. Red potions restore a lost triangle, while blue ones drain one, and green jars grant a brief hover. The sword you pick up in the first room lets you slash, parry, or push enemies into spikes, pits or guillotines, and a skeletal foe in level 3 can only be dispatched by dropping it into a pit.

Beyond combat, the game rewards exploration: secret passages hide extra jars, and magic mirrors create a doppelgänger that shares your health bar, turning every hit into a strategic puzzle. The mix of timed platforming, trap navigation and potion management makes the Game Gear port a compact yet surprisingly deep retro challenge.

Storyline

Set in medieval Persia, the Sultan is away fighting a distant war when his wizard vizier Jaffar usurps the throne. Jaffar’s only obstacle is the Sultan’s daughter, whom he locks in a tower and threatens to kill within 60 minutes unless she becomes his wife. The unnamed hero, beloved by the Princess, is thrown into the palace dungeons and must escape, reach the tower, and defeat Jaffar before the clock runs out.

During his escape the hero encounters a magic mirror in level 4; jumping through it summons a doppelgänger that drains his health. The shadow steals a potion in level 5 and hurls the hero from level 6 into a lower dungeon at level 7. In level 8 the Princess sends a white mouse to reopen a gate, allowing the hero to continue his quest.

The final stage pits the hero against his own shadow, which shares his life force. To survive he must merge with the apparition, cross an invisible bridge into a new area, and battle Jaffar. Defeating the vizier shatters the spell, freeing the Princess and securing the hero’s place as the Prince of Persia.
