Summary

Primal Rage on the Game Gear surprises you with surprisingly vivid color sprites for a handheld from the mid‑90s. The brutal prehistoric beasts look almost as detailed as the arcade, and the game keeps the signature gory finishers—including the infamous “urination” fatality—intact, which was rare for a portable title.

The control scheme is a breath of fresh air: special moves are triggered by holding a button while swinging the directional pad, making combos feel effortless compared to the motion‑heavy inputs of other fighters. A hidden cheat swaps Diablo’s grim minions for a tongue‑in‑cheek cameo of Probe Software’s former CEO, adding a quirky layer for dedicated players.

Critics praised the port for delivering sharp, colorful graphics and a deep moveset that didn’t compromise on the series’ over‑the‑top violence. It quickly became a highlight of the Game Gear library, showing that a fierce arcade fighter could thrive on a tiny screen.

Storyline

In the handheld version of Primal Rage, a cataclysmic meteor strike wipes out modern civilization, forcing the surviving humans back into primitive, Stone Age tribes. The world is overrun by a sprawling primordial rainforest, and the continents have reshaped into a gigantic dinosaur skull known as “Urth.”

Seven colossal, super‑powered creatures awaken from deep within Urth’s crust, and the fragmented humans begin to worship each as a god, forming separate clans beneath their chosen deity. Some of these beasts strive to maintain a fragile peace, while others plot to unleash further chaos for their own twisted purposes.

The game's story follows the clash of these divine monsters as they battle for dominance, with the fate of the new world hanging on the outcome of their primal struggle.
