Summary

Paperboy II on the Game Gear cranks the classic paper‑delivery chaos up a notch. You still zip around a suburban street on a bike, but now you’ve got houses on both sides, which means twice the customers to please and twice the non‑subscribers to prank. The game throws everything from rolling tires and a haunted house to a baby‑rescue side‑quest and a burglar‑stopping sprint into the mix, and it even caps the day with a BMX‑style test course that feels like a retro stunt‑track. Visually the handheld version shines with sharper sprites and brighter colors, though the looping tune eventually grates on the ears. Critics were split – Power Unlimited gave it a solid 78% for its addictive, all‑American vibe, while Game Players only managed a lukewarm 5‑out‑of‑10, mainly because the music grew annoying.

Storyline

In Paperboy II (Game Gear), the player rides a bike delivering newspapers through suburban streets, and midway through each stage four special actions can be triggered that earn a front‑page photo for the next day's paper. One action is smashing a window with a paper, which prints the headline “Mysterious Vandalism Baffles Police” alongside an angry cop. Another is stumbling onto a gas‑station robbery and knocking the gunman out with a paper, resulting in the headline “Paperboy Foils Armed Robbery”. A third is catching a runaway baby carriage with a paper, giving the headline “Girl Saves Breakaway Baby”. Both heroic deeds end with a smiling policeman handing the paperboy a piece of candy.
