Summary

Pac‑Attack (sometimes called Pac‑Panic) drops the iconic yellow hero out of his maze and into a falling‑tile puzzle that feels both familiar and fresh. I love how the game swaps the usual line‑clearing routine for a mix of blocks and mischievous ghosts that tumble down a vertical playfield.

Blocks vanish when you line them up horizontally across the screen, but ghosts only go away when you drop a Pac‑Man piece that chomps them in its facing direction. As you eat ghosts, a little fairy meter fills up on the left; once it’s full a fairy piece swoops in and clears every ghost below it, setting off satisfying chain reactions.

Beyond the solo challenge, there’s a competitive two‑player mode where clearing pieces on your side sends extra blocks to your opponent, and a 100‑level Puzzle Mode that rewards clever, minimal moves with passwords to resume later.

The 1994 Game Gear version shines thanks to Hiromi Shibano’s catchy soundtrack and Greg Martin’s eye‑catching cover art. Namco even ran a GameFan contest with a $500 gift certificate as the grand prize, and reviewers praised its addictive simplicity, portable fun, and clever use of Pac‑Man, calling it one of the system’s best puzzle titles.
