Summary
Nazo Puyo: Arle no Roux is a quirky puzzle title that broke the mold of its predecessors by blending RPG elements with the classic drop‑match gameplay. Developed by Compile for the Sega Game Gear, it arrived only in Japan in 1994 as the third entry of the Nazo Puyo line, yet it feels like a fresh adventure rather than a simple sequel. The game’s hybrid design gives players a modest storyline to follow while still demanding quick thinking on the grid. Its unique formula was compelling enough to inspire two SNES follow‑ups: Super Nazo Puyo Rulue no Roux, which re‑tools the original and adds a Rulue‑centric story mode, and Super Nazo Puyo Tsu: Rulue no Tetsuwan Hanjouki, a brand‑new Rulue‑focused adventure.
Storyline
Nazo Puyo: Arle no Roux puts you in a hub world as Arle Nadja, where other characters hand you puzzle challenges instead of a straight‑line list. Each challenger has its own set of preset boards, victory conditions and a specific pool of Puyo, and the puzzles appear in a random order until you’ve cleared enough of that character’s riddles to claim victory. A new health mechanic tracks Arle’s mood: every failed puzzle makes her facial expression grow more depressed, and when the portrait shows her gritting her teeth the game ends. Unlike earlier Nazo Puyo titles, there’s no endless stream of irrelevant Puyo pairs—failure immediately costs health. Your health fully recovers whenever you level up or defeat a challenger by solving enough of their puzzles, letting you press on with a refreshed Arle.
