Summary

Monster World II: Dragon no Wana (known in the West as Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap) feels like a compact adventure pocketed into the Game Gear’s tiny screen. The game’s non‑linear map lets you wander through varied landscapes, hunting for hidden items and clues that unlock new zones of Monster Land. What really spices things up is the transformation system – you can shift into forms like Lizard‑Man or Hu‑Man, each granting fresh abilities and even letting you crouch in certain shapes.

Combat is simple but deep: the D‑pad moves you left or right, while a press of the attack button swings your primary weapon, and holding down on the D‑pad lets you fire secondary weapons. Gold drops from enemies and treasure chests, then funds upgrades at shops or a quick heal at hospitals. Some gear bears a question‑mark price, only purchasable once you’ve collected enough charm stones or equipped the right items.

A handy password feature at the town’s church saves your current form, gear, and gold, though it skips secondary weapons and potions – a nostalgic reminder of early handheld save systems.

Storyline

Monster World II - Dragon no Wana (often just called Monster World II) picks up right after Wonder Boy in Monster Land. After slaying the Mecha Dragon, Wonder Boy is cursed and turned into Lizard‑Man, forcing him to set out from the town of Alsedo to break the spell. The only way to lift the curse is to collect the Salamander Cross by defeating the Vampire Dragon after a trek through a series of themed zones – underwater, desert, jungle, cave and sky. Each zone ends with a unique dragon; beating one transforms Wonder Boy into a new form with fresh abilities, such as Mouse‑Man’s wall‑climbing, Piranha‑Man’s free swimming, Lion‑Man’s overhead sword slash, and Hawk‑Man’s aerial flight. The game’s non‑linear structure lets players choose the order of these challenges as they hunt down the dragons and ultimately restore Wonder Boy’s true form.
