Summary
Micro Machines on the Game Gear captures the charm of the original top‑down racer while squeezing it onto a tiny handheld screen. Tiny toy cars, helicopters, powerboats and even tanks zip around everyday settings – breakfast tables littered with cereal boxes, desks cluttered with pencil sharpeners, pool tables and treehouses – all rendered in bright, simplified graphics that still feel recognizably playful.
The game offers two distinct modes. In the Micro Machines Challenge you battle three AI opponents, needing a first‑ or second‑place finish to survive, with a time‑trial every three races that can earn you an extra life. Head‑to‑head pits two racers against each other in a light‑capture race: each lap lights up a segment of the screen in the leader’s colour, and the first to dominate all eight lights wins, with sudden‑death play‑offs for ties.
Developed by Ashley Routledge and Dave Saunders in 1993, the port was built from scratch to run at a smooth 60 FPS. The team re‑drawed art with fewer colours, shifted the camera back to give players a clearer view of the track, and enabled two‑player link‑up or split‑control on a single device, making the miniature racing experience surprisingly fluid despite the Game Gear’s limited memory and screen size.
