Summary
The Lucky Dime Caper Starring Donald Duck rolls onto the Game Gear and Master System as a bright, side‑scrolling platformer that feels like a Disney‑themed cousin of Castle of Illusion. Donald wields a hammer and can fling magical discs, and grabbing star items lets him swing faster, while the UK’s limited‑edition box even bundled a Donald‑themed T‑shirt and a cassette of eight Disney tunes. The adventure spans seven distinct zones—Northern Woods, Great American Forest, Andes Mountains, Tropical Isles, the Pyramids, the South Pole, and finally Magica’s Castle—each packed with the familiar ice, desert, underwater and lava set‑pieces that platform fans recognize. On the Game Gear the level select screen is silent, there’s no timer, and you can’t backtrack, but collecting five stars nets extra points and the hammer never breaks when hit. Critics praised the graphics and challenge, though later retrospectives noted the game’s rushed feel, Donald’s slippery movement and a notoriously poor jump that still makes it a quirky Disney classic.
Storyline
In the Game Gear title Lucky Dime Caper, the nefarious witch Magica De Spell steals Scrooge McDuck’s legendary Number One Dime and kidnaps his three grand‑nephews—Huey, Dewey and Louie. Determined to set things right, Donald Duck launches a globe‑trotting quest, confronting Magica’s rotten ravens and assorted traps along the way. His goal is to rescue the trio and reclaim the lucky dime, proving that the sorceress is no match for his duck‑determined spirit.
