Summary

The Game Gear version of Lemmings drops you into a frantic puzzle marathon of about 120 levels, each demanding quick thinking and precise timing. Instead of steering a single creature, you move a cross‑hair over any lemming and assign a skill—climber, floater, bomber, blocker, builder, miner or digger—by clicking the appropriate icon at the bottom of the screen. Every level limits the number of each skill and sets a rescue‑percentage goal, so you must decide which lemmings get the right ability before the timer runs out.

The skill set works exactly as in the original: climbers scale vertical walls, floaters parachute safely, bombers explode after five seconds, and the various tunnellers carve paths through earth but not steel. Because you can only assign abilities in real time, the challenge is as much about managing the flow of lemmings as it is about solving the terrain. The difficulty ramps from "Fun" to "Mayhem," pushing you from simple gaps to complex, multi‑step constructions.

Critics gave the handheld port mixed marks—scores ranging from 5/10 to 7/10—but praised how the core puzzle formula translates to a portable screen. The fast‑paced nature of the Game Gear’s small display makes each rescue feel urgent, and the variety of levels keeps the experience fresh.

As a slice of the legendary Lemmings franchise, this version captures the original’s addictive blend of strategy and chaos, proving that even on a tiny handheld you can still spend hours coaxing those green‑haired, blue‑robed critters to safety.
