Summary

G-LOC: Air Battle landed on the Game Gear as a compact take on Sega’s arcade hit, swapping the R‑360’s dizzying motion for a handheld point system that lets you upgrade your jet between missions. While the original arcade dazzled with its gyroscopic cabinet and the After Burner‑style dogfights, the portable version keeps the high‑speed feel and adds a layer of progression that the Genesis and Master System versions lack. The game’s name, a nod to “G‑force‑induced loss of consciousness,” hints at the intense maneuvers you’ll pull, even on a tiny screen. Despite the stripped‑down hardware, the port captured enough of the arcade’s adrenaline to become a standout title on Sega’s handheld lineup, later earning a nostalgic revival on the 3DS. Its success helped cement G‑LOC as a memorable spin‑off in the early ’90s arcade‑to‑home transition.

Storyline

In G-LOC: Air Battle for the Game Gear, you pilot an experimental aircraft designated A8M5, which is progressively upgraded to the A8M6 as the mission unfolds. The core objective is to eliminate a variety of enemy units—ships, jet fighters, and tanks—by either firing the onboard cannon or locking on with missiles. The game shifts between a first‑person view for normal flight and a third‑person perspective when an enemy missile locks on, giving you space to execute evasive maneuvers.

Combat is driven by a joystick, and you can choose which targets to engage, moving the crosshair over foes before launching missiles. Throughout the campaign you face increasingly tough opponents, culminating in boss encounters such as the War Balloon, a massive Bomber, and finally an enemy ace piloting a mirror version of your own plane with superior durability and firepower. Each boss requires careful targeting and maneuvering to defeat, rounding out the high‑speed aerial showdown.
