Summary

Ecco the Dolphin lets you glide through the ocean as a bottlenose dolphin, using a simple two‑button scheme that feels surprisingly deep. Tap the speed button to burst forward, hold it to maintain a rapid pace, and ram enemies at high velocity for damage. The same button also triggers Ecco’s song, which doubles as echolocation – hold it down to reveal a sonar map of hidden passages and interact with the glowing crystal glyphs that guard the way. Because you’re a mammal, an air meter forces you to surface or find vents, and a separate health bar can be replenished by eating fish or singing to clams and special statues. Two optional upgrades let the song become a long‑range charge attack and temporarily freeze sharks, adding a strategic layer to the puzzle‑filled levels.

The Game Gear port swaps several stages for brand‑new ones, giving the handheld its own rhythm. It opens with a haunting whale song and title screen filled with laughing dolphins, while the SEGA logo itself is rendered as a dolphin silhouette. Composer Csaba Gigor and Gábor Foltán supplied a fresh soundtrack that leans into the synth‑ambient vibe of the original. A wider color gamut makes the underwater world pop on the tiny screen, and the sprite work retains the fluid feel of the console version. All of these tweaks keep the experience tight enough for short play sessions without sacrificing the series’ signature challenge.

Critics praised the handheld version, with AllGame awarding 4.5 out of 5 and Player One giving it a near‑perfect 96 %. European magazines echoed the sentiment, scoring it in the high 80s and 90s across the board. The consensus was clear: Ecco on Game Gear delivers the same atmospheric puzzle‑action that made the original a cult classic, now in a portable package.

Storyline

Ecco the Dolphin (Game Gear) opens with a playful challenge: a podmate dares Ecco to jump as high as he can, only for a massive waterspout to appear and whisk away every marine creature in the bay except him. Alone, Ecco swims out of the bay, encounters other dolphins and an orca who advises him to seek the ancient "Big Blue" in the Arctic. The wise blue whale explains that the chaotic storms happen every 500 years and points Ecco toward the Asterite, the oldest life form on Earth.

Following the whale’s counsel, Ecco reaches a deep‑sea cavern where the Asterite reveals that several of its power orbs were lost long ago. The creature sends him to the sunken ruins of Atlantis, where an ancient library of glyph‑filled crystals tells of the Vortex—an alien race that harvests Earth’s waters during a planetary alignment, causing the storms. Using a time machine left by the Atlanteans, Ecco travels 55 million years into the past, learns a song to communicate with a Pteranodon, and battles the Asterite to recover a missing globe.

Back in the present, the Asterite grants Ecco a sonar weapon, underwater breathing, and slow health regeneration. He then returns to the moment of the harvest, is sucked into the waterspout with his pod, and is flung into a colossal Vortex construct in outer space. After navigating the alien machine, Ecco confronts the Vortex Queen, defeats her, and the freed pod escapes back to Earth, ending the crisis.
