Summary

Deep Duck Trouble Starring Donald Duck (often just called Deep Duck Trouble) is a bright, 2‑D side‑scrolling platformer that landed on the Game Gear in the early ’90s. The game hands you Donald and lets you pick any of the five courses from a simple map screen, each course split into two branching sections that end in a boss fight and a glittering treasure. The level design feels like a love‑letter to DuckTales and Castle of Illusion, with classic run‑jump‑dodge action and a handful of hidden routes to explore.

Donald’s arsenal is delightfully simple: you can stomp on foes or kick a nearby box, and some boxes disguise treasure chests that grant health, score boosts, or the quirky chili‑pepper power‑up that sends him barreling forward, crushing anything in his path. You start with three "tries" and can earn extra lives sparingly; losing all lives drops you back to the map, where a Continue option lets you pick up where you left off.

The title earned solid praise at launch, scoring in the high‑70s to 80% range from magazines like Electronic Gaming Monthly and Sega Magazine, who lauded its smooth animation and fun platforming despite a modest difficulty curve. A 2001 plan to re‑release the game alongside a Game Gear revival hinted at its lasting appeal, and retro‑gaming retrospectives still note its crisp graphics even if they call the experience a bit short and easy.

Storyline

In Donald Duck no 4‑Tsu no Hihou, Scrooge McDuck discovers an old map that leads to a forgotten island where a priceless golden amulet lies hidden in a shrine. After retrieving the amulet, the cursed relic inflates Scrooge like a balloon, prompting Huey, Dewey and Louie to summon Donald for help. Armed with Scrooge’s adventure diary, Donald sails to the island and learns he must gather four hidden treasures and toss them into a sacred lake to reveal the shrine’s entrance.

Inside the shrine Donald overcomes a series of trials, returns the amulet to its original pedestal and triggers the appearance of a mysterious crown. He takes the crown back home, the curse on Scrooge is lifted, but Scrooge warns that the crown may be cursed as well. The game ends with Donald afflicted by the same curse, while Scrooge and the nephews walk off toward another adventure on the island.
