Summary

Columns on the Game Gear feels like a handheld tribute to the early match‑three craze, and I’m always amazed by how much depth Sega squeezed into that tiny screen. The game drops three‑symbol columns that you can slide and rotate, and when three or more of the same symbol line up—horizontally, vertically or diagonally—they vanish and the pile settles under gravity, often sparking chain reactions. A special multicolor Magic Jewel can wipe out every gem of the color beneath it, while “Flash columns” and “Time trial” modes add a race‑to‑the‑bottom or a points‑under‑the‑clock twist. The Gear version even lets you swap the classic jewels for fruit, dice, squares or playing‑card suits, and you can pick from three musical backdrops. With three difficulty levels, ten stages, five block types, and a two‑player gear‑to‑gear cable showdown, the game stays fresh long after the well fills up.

Storyline

Columns on Game Gear drifts you back to ancient Phoenicia, a setting where Middle Eastern merchants are said to have enjoyed this addictive puzzle pastime. The game challenges you to tinker with your riches, aligning glittering jewels across, down, or diagonally to clear the board.
