Summary

The Game Gear version of *Cliffhanger* drops you straight into the icy Alps with a side‑scrolling beat‑'em‑up that feels like a stripped‑down *Double Dragon*. You control Gabe, dodging or dispatching foes with knives, guns and the occasional money bag that bumps up your score toward a bizarre 958,845‑point ceiling. The graphics are tiny and blocky by today’s standards, but the game does manage a handful of boss fights, culminating in a showdown with Qualen, the terrorist leader. Critics were merciless – the controls were described as sluggish, the soundtrack grating, and the visuals reminiscent of early NES titles, earning the handheld a sub‑3/10 average. Even retro fans now see it as a cautionary example of how a big‑screen movie tie‑in can go spectacularly wrong on a portable console.

Storyline

Cliffhanger on the Game Gear drops you into a high‑stakes aerial drama. A treasury plane carrying a fortune is hijacked by a group of terrorists, and an FBI interceptor shoots it down. The surviving crooks broadcast a distress signal, which the game’s hero, Gabe, answers, unaware that the mayday is a trap.

When Gabe reaches the crash site, the terrorists seize his partner, Hal, and use him as leverage. They demand the stolen money back, forcing Gabe into a desperate race against time.

The player must guide Gabe through hostile terrain, recover the cash, and rescue Hal before the situation spirals out of control.
