Summary

Choplifter III on the Sega Game Gear captures the frantic rescue‑helicopter action of its console siblings in a pocket‑sized package. The handheld version keeps the core loop of swooping in, snatching hostages, and battling enemy fire, but the smaller screen forces you to plan each move more carefully. I love how the game squeezes a surprisingly deep challenge into the limited controls, rewarding precise timing and quick reflexes. The bright, sprite‑heavy graphics pop on the Gear’s LCD, giving each mission a distinct visual flavor despite the hardware’s constraints.

Even though it’s a port, the Game Gear edition feels fresh thanks to its brisk pacing and the way it leverages the handheld’s portability—perfect for quick sessions on the bus or during a break. The soundtrack, though simple, loops with an upbeat chiptune vibe that keeps the adrenaline high as you navigate increasingly crowded skies.
