Summary
The Game Gear version of Captain America and the Avengers drops the arcade’s four‑player mayhem for a solo‑friendly experience. You can still pick any of the core heroes—Captain America, Iron Man, Hawkeye, or Vision—each with its own melee moves, throwable items and signature ranged "Avenger Attack" (shields, arrows, or energy beams). The port keeps the classic side‑scrolling brawls and occasional flying sections where the characters zip across the sky on their own or in contraptions.
While the graphics and sound are pared down for the handheld, the game manages to keep the core feel alive. Reviewers were split: Electronic Gaming Monthly gave it a 32/50, noting it “fares well … even without the two‑player simultaneous play,” whereas GamePro dismissed it as “a forgettable scroller” with mediocre animation. Despite the mixed reception, it remains a nostalgic slice of Marvel beat‑em‑up history for portable gamers.
Storyline
In "Captain America and the Avengers" (often just called Captain America & the Avengers), the nefarious Red Skull has gathered an army of super‑villains to seize world domination. As the player you fight through waves of generic henchmen before confronting a roster of iconic foes. The lineup includes Klaw, the Living Laser, Whirlwind, a Sentinel, the Wizard, the Grim Reaper, the Mandarin, Juggernaut, Ultron, the Controller, and the assassin Crossbones. Each battle brings a new challenge, building tension toward the final showdown. The climax pits you directly against Red Skull himself, ending his plot to rule the planet.
