Summary
Asterix and the Great Rescue is a side‑scrolling platformer that greets you with a simple menu where you can pick a difficulty level and even mute the music or sound effects if you prefer quiet gaming. The Game Gear version lets you swap between Asterix and Obelix on the fly, each character bringing a quirky special ability that feels fresh in the middle of a level. You’ll punch Roman soldiers with fist‑full fury, sip magic potions, and pull off clever tricks as you trek through 30 varied stages, from the bustling Village of Gaul to the imposing Roman fort and out onto the high seas. Nathan McCree supplied the soundtrack, marking his debut as a video‑game composer; his work here paved the way for later scores on titles like Asterix and the Power of the Gods and the iconic Tomb Raider series.
Storyline
Asterix and the Great Rescue (often just called Asterix and the Great Rescue) is a Game Gear adventure that pulls directly from the long‑running French comic Asterix the Gaul. The plot follows the indomitable Gaulish duo, Asterix and his hulking friend Obelix, as they launch a daring crusade across the Roman Empire. Their mission: to free the village druid Getafix—known in the comics as Panoramix—and the loyal canine Dogmatix, or Idéfix, who have been captured by the Romans. The Romans are in the midst of a sweeping takeover of Gaul, and the heroes must thwart Caesar’s plans while rescuing their friends.
Throughout the side‑scrolling journey, players battle legionaries, navigate Roman towns, and collect the magic potion that gives Asterix his legendary strength. Each level brings the pair closer to confronting Caesar himself and restoring peace to their homeland.
