Summary
Zen: Intergalactic Ninja flashes onto the Game Boy with a slick three‑quarter 3D perspective that lets the player scroll in all directions, while difficulty can be tuned and extra lives are tossed in for forgiveness. I pilot Zen, an alien turned eco‑warrior, as he slices through twelve stages spread across four disaster zones, from acid‑rain‑swept forests to a burning oil rig and a toxic plutonium mine. Each zone challenges you to rescue flora, douse flames, thwart venom‑spitting foes, and occasional bonus rounds reward you for recycling debris.
Critics seemed to appreciate the eco‑centric twist. Power Unlimited handed it a 90/100, praising the variety of locations, enemy designs, and the game’s “cool action” that stands out among handheld platformers. The Fort Worth Star‑Telegram gave the portable a solid 8/10, while the Paisley Daily Express noted solid gameplay and decent looks, even if it didn’t break new ground.
Storyline
Zen: Intergalactic Ninja on Game Boy follows an alien superhero turned eco‑warrior named Zen. He is sent to retrieve a buried geocrystal, but the villain Lord Contaminous wants to smash the crystal and doom the planet. Zen teams up with Jeremy Baker, Earth’s destined “starchild,” and the Recycled Heroes to stop the ecological threat. Together they battle through twelve levels that include rescuing flora from acid rain, fighting toxic venom, extinguishing raging fires, and navigating a plutonium mine.
The duo also confronts Garbageman’s gaseous minions before the final showdown with Lord Contaminous. Their mission is to protect Earth’s environment and prevent total ecological collapse. Each stage tests their resolve as they strive to safeguard the geocrystal. In the end, Zen’s eco‑warrior resolve determines the planet’s fate.
