Summary

Yakuman hit the Game Boy shelves as one of the system’s four launch titles in Japan, and it was the very first game to make the handheld’s link cable useful for head‑to‑head play. Satoru Okada, the assistant director behind the Game Boy’s hardware, pushed hard for that feature and even led the cable’s development, turning a skeptical team into pioneers of portable multiplayer.

The game offers a single‑player mode where you can challenge five distinct computer opponents, each programmed with its own style, and a two‑player versus mode that requires two Game Boys hooked together. It supports several Japanese mahjong rule sets, letting players chase the rare, high‑scoring "yakuman" hands that give the title its name.

Although Yakuman never left Japan except for a modest Chinese release in 1995, it spawned a long‑running series of first‑party mahjong titles on later Nintendo consoles. The cover character even pops up as a cameo in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, a nod to its quiet but influential place in Nintendo’s early handheld history.
